Upon removing the woven ground wire from the stomp starter linkage bolt, it became clear why we have so many issues with charging and starting over time.
The ground strap sits on top of the stomp starter hinge strap. The block is under the hinge hinge strap. There is a bent piece of metal on top of the ground strap preventing the underside of the bolt from contacting the ground strap.
That makes 4 surfaces which must be kept perfectly clean to avoid starting/charging issues, especially with a six volt system, and that is just one end of one ground strap.

You can never have too many, or too heavy gauge grounds!

I haven't built one like this yet. It's a bucket list project. I want be able to use a hand crank to start it at a show. I haven't seen that done yet on an AD.

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,984 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,984 | 52Carl, if you want to preserve the conductivity of those connections, I recommend you clean each surface to bare metal, then use an electrical paste such as NoAlox on each side of the components, a little smear on the surface. It won't wash off and keeps the surface from oxidizing. As long as the bolt/s stay tight, the electrical conductivity will last a little past forever. It is a little messy and sticky but works well.

Rather than placing the ground strap on top of the hinge strap of the stomp starter, I placed it under the hinge strap directly contacting the bell housing. I used a thin washer under the hinge strap where the rear bolt goes through the hinge strap. I did this to level up the hinge strap due to the thickness of the ground strap under the front hinge strap bolt.
I them put the bent sheet metal piece on top of the hinge strap.
I will find out soon enough if the addition of 3/32" under the strap will affect the function of the engagement of the stomp starter
I will be back once I find out one way or the other.
