If you have it, once decoded, it would tell you plant location, year of truck, size (half ton, 3/4 ton, etc), month it was officially produced and then the production number.

What he is looking for is the number of 1960 C10 trucks produced at the Oakland plant. Something that it doesn’t seem GM did a good job of in record keeping or providing such data to the public. Some folks have found full year production data for a few years, but that for the most part was only national production totals, not individual plant counts. Bill Hanlon’s suggestion to reach out to the GM Heritage Archive I think has merit. It may take some emails, phone calls and persistence to get an answer, but that may be the only source capable of providing such numbers.

But if 1001 is the starting serial number each MONTH, then it could have been produced in any month of the year. Some clues to the production date would be on rear axle, transmission, and engine serial numbers, which do include the month and day of production. An early production 1960 would likely not have a late production rear axle and transmission, assuming they hadn't been changed.
For instance, my 51's serial number 6JPD 7565 indicates the following: 6=Oakland plant J = 1951 P = 3100 D = April 7565 = 6565th truck off the line. I believe this number started at 1001 EACH MONTH as the yearly total would be around 150,000 for the Oakland plant which I'm guessing to be roughly correct. Comparing other 51 AD serial numbers would confirm that supposition. I've seen a '50 2 Ton with a serial number of 9TWE 2893, Norwood plant, 6400, May production, 1893rd truck off the line.

Unit numbers for 1960 started at 100001 for each model and continued in sequence through the entire model year...Chevrolet never reset the unit number each month. Thanks If your unit number is 100918, than it was the 918th C10 off the line, but there could have been thousands of cars built ahead of your truck. Your serial number should look like this 0C144O100918...am I right? Any idea when the '60 model year productions started?
