Hello I am a newbie to this site and have a general question I am seeking some advice on. I am purchasing a 1941 Suburban that I plan on doing a complete frame off restoration on. It has the stock 216, 3 speed etc. I was also offered another 41 rolling chassis with a 235, open driveline and highway geared rear. Once the project is complete I plan on towing a prewar vintage travel trailer that weighs 2900 lbs in the summers. I would also like to have the advantage of an overdrive gear for daily use. The idea is keep one chassis bone stock and modify the other for daily use / summer towing.
I posted under the "Engine and Driveline Forum" and have been getting excellent advice on gas inlines and trannys, and am still leaning in that direction. This afternoon I was talking with a guy who works in our shop and he suggested that I consider installing a diesel for better feul economy and torque. Has anyone on here put a diesel in a 1/2 ton frame? Am I nuts to even consider this? I know very little about diesels and diesel transmissions....not to mention rears.
Any suggestions?
I want to say thanks for all of the great input I have already gotten, and thanks for reading this.

Look at a Cummins 4BT or 4BTA, essentially 2/3 of a Dodge truck engine

Probably your best choice for a small yet powerful diesel, any older or smaller and you will probably be better off with the 235.

A Diesel conversion will be a fair amount of work...
