Will a SM465 Chevy (Muncie?) trans bolt up to a 216 CHEVY SIX or do I need an adapter?

Mike, I'm moving your post in to the HiPo shop, where you'll be sure to get an answer. You already know what the part you have is, so Name that Part section isn't appropriate.

The o.d. of the front brg retainer is larger on the 465 than the original trans.
Why not use a sm420?

Or one could bore out the 216 bellhousing, more work, though.

Are you sure it is a T465? An SM465 came in later trucks.

The T465 was a transverse transmission they put behind the V6 in Fieros.

If you mean SM465, then you would at least have to change the bellhousing. What other parts do you have to go with it already?

Have a chance to get a GMC rear axle to replace original closed driveshaft, would use that trans with it.

So I would need the SM420, different bellhousing, the GMC rear, and drive shaft. What else?

Would an S-10 5-speed be easier to use?

Just to make sure we understand.

You want to take the original transmission, closed driveshaft, and axle out and put in a newer GMC axle with some kind of transmission that is compatible?

Also, what vehicle is this for? That could make a difference for mounts and such.

A SM 420 will bolt to the bellhousing found on a 216 TRUCK engine from 1948-53. The bellhousing behind a 216 in a passenger car has a totally different bolt pattern for the transmission, and a different diameter hole for the bearing retainer IMHO. The SM420 can be had in either open driveline of torque tube configuration at the rear. The basic transmissions, other than the rear bearing retainer, are the same.

That would be my choice all day long. You will need to pay attention to the rear axle gear ratio, and choose a T-5 with the best 5th gear overdrive ratio for the axle ratio you are going with. They range from .72 to .86 overdrive.
If I were to put a T-5 behind a 216, I would chose a T-5 with a .72 5th gear ratio, and a 4.10 or numerically higher ratio rear axle gears.
You need a higher ratio rear axle gear ratio to keep the RPM higher in order to get as much torque/horsepower out of that relatively underpowered 216.
With this setup, you will be in the optimal power range every time you shift gears. No more lugging the engine every time you shift gears and no more screaming engine right before shifting gears.
