The circled plugs are the drain/fill for the SM420, right? I got the recommended TSC mineral oil and changing that should be the last maintenance item before trying to get on the road.

Yes- - - -the normal lube level will be just slightly below the bottom of the upper plug hole. If you can put a fingertip into the hole and touch fluid with the transmission cold, that leaves a little room for heat expansion during normal running. Too high, and there's a tendency to leak from the front bearing retainer and contaminate the clutch disc, especially if the vehicle is parked in a nose-down attitude. The spinning cluster gear splash-lubricates the whole transmission.

Thanks. I remembered the bit about keeping the level a bit below there from another thread.

With any luck we can be on the road tomorrow.

We will see how many mistakes we made during assembly when we put the fuses in and start testing everything. With (good) luck it will work tomorrow, but it has been a long time since I have seen any of that. Working 10-15 min a day keeps progress moving, but it also breaks up task continuity and makes it easy to miss things.

I am still looking for an excuse to wander up your way. Your weather seems a lot more compelling than mine this week.

hmmmmmm, Checking oil level in your SM420, while fishing for some Alaskan Salmon. Can't beat that.

Back to reality, I insert my finger into the upper hole and bend the finger tip downward to hopefully touch the oil level at around 1/4"+ below the upper hole.

If I'm not working on my truck, '65 m00stang or VW camper, I'm fishing with the wife or smoking Salmon.
