Tommy, have you ever cut open the filter to see what is being filtered out?

Bill, after the parade and the dust settles on you cooling system project, consider installing a coolant filter. You can use a remote filter base and a couple of METAL quarter turn valves and plumb it all into the heater circuit. Wix makes spin on filters with sacrificial zinc sized for various engines. I think the part number I used was a Dodge/Cummins application. Under the radiator cap inspections shows squeeky clean tubes after 2 years and 10,000 miles.
I’ve thought about doing that.
Also have an idea to use a strong-arse magnet in some sort of plumbing tee…..to grab the super-fine iron particles floating about. Probably plunged into the heater circuit.
Sorry about the delay responding- - - - -major computer troubles with both the laptop I use, and the desktop unit my wife prefers. They're both at the computer doc- - - -who is putting a vacuum cleaner to my checking account for two new systems and trying to transfer several years' worth of files! I finally managed to change the password on a system my BIL used before he passed away several months ago so I have some limited internet access for the time being.
I use about a pound of TSP to 5 gallons of water in a stainless steel tank when I'm degreasing guns prior to rust-bluing them. That same ratio should work well in a cooling system. I run the degreaser tank just below the boiling point- - - -180-200 degrees F. Jerry

Thanks Jerry. Good luck with the computer recovery.

85F air temp at the 4th of July parade this morning. About 1 mile and took 45 minutes. Truck never got over 175F with 50/50 antifreeze/water mix and no thermostat.
Photo just before the start.

That's fantastic news Bill! Awesome picture to boot!

I got most of the way through the flush process today. Any harm in leaving the TSP solution in it overnight?
No problem at all- - - -it's just laundry detergent on steroids! My gun bluing preclean solution stays in the tank for months, but those tanks are made from 1/16" thick stainless steel. The stuff crystallizes, but it redissolves as soon as the water gets hot. Jerry '

I wish I’d have taken before and after pics of my coolant in the overflow jar. From embrassingly gross to fluorescent green.
Thanks for the tips, Jerry! Did both the muriatic acid flush and the TSP. Wasn’t until after the TSP that the block drain flowed as freely as it should. Was a crap ton of work, but well worth it in the end.

JW51, is your engine original? By that I mean hasn't been rebuilt? Just wondering how long it took to crud up.
I thought I asked earlier but must have forgotten to hit Post Reply.

Not orginal. But sat for 30+ years before I got it. I did a very thorough vinegar flush before I ever got it running. Last coolant change/flush was 3 years ago. But I had a bad rad cap somewhere in between. I think that contributed to the rusty mess I had this go round. Air in the system.
Gonna try to be better at changing coolant (I use the old style green stuff) every 2nd year.
Otto, yes I cut a coolant filter apart when it plugged up completely after a dose of preventative stop leak. Not surprisingly it was full of black granules that I took to be stopleak. But it coule have been just more of the grit I didn't get out of the head.

I also use the green ethylene glycol in everything. Tried and true.
Luckily the fluid in my truck is still nice, absinthe green after 3+ years and no overheating problems have been observed.
