Just want to confirm that the 230 that came in my 1965 C-10 was a 3-speed without overdrive, and with a 1st gear that is unsynchronized.

The 292 came with a 3 speed with overdrive. So the transmissions are not interchangable.

Thanks

Not enough information. The mid 1960's was about the tine Chevy switched from the Muncie SM 318 with a non-synchronized 1st. gear to the Saginaw which had synchro on 1st. Both transmissions could be ordered with the optional Borg-Warned overdrive, although OD Saginaws were exceedingly rare. The Muncie SM 318 and 319 (OD) has four bolts that attach the shift cover. A Saginaw has 7 cover bolts.

So I guess I have the Muncie SM 318. Will it bolt on a 292?

Yes- - - -the bell housing bolt pattern, input shaft, and clutch should be the same for both transmissions. There are two different lengths for the output shaft and rear housing, so the length of the driveshaft and the position of the rear crossmember would vary according to the application. The SM 319 is a 318 with the Borg-Warner overdrive attached. The output shaft and the main case are slightly different, but the majority of the transmission internal parts will interchange.

Does the transmission on 292 have 4 bolt cover? Pictures would be good, but likely all will swap easily.
Might have to swap covers if the shift arms are oriented different.
Did you run the newer trans through a few tests to make sure it is worthy? Should be easy on the bench prior to install.

Thank you guys. I am asking because I am looking for a 230 or 292 to go in my truck, and if I find a 292 I need to know if I need to get tranny too.

The same bellhousing bolt pattern fits almost all Chevy transmissions- - - -Muncie, Saginaw, and some Borg Warner models. It also fits the T-5 overdrive trans with a little adapting for the length of the shaft and possibly a change of the clutch disc to fit a fine spline input shaft.
