A buddy of mine asked me to look at his ‘63 Chevy C20 with a 230, three speed on the column and a Rochester B single bbl carb installed. He had a issue with the throttle getting stuck and found a spring attached to the linkage that one end was broken off. He asked if he could pick one up at the hardware store and I couldn’t find how it was attached to the linkage. The spring he had, seemed too heavy for a throttle return. I can’t find a diagram or picture of how this spring is attached nor a source to buy one.
Can one of our ‘Bolters show me a diagram from the Assembly Manual or a good picture of how it is setup and what he needs, that would be great.

I just googled up "1963 Chevrolet 230 engine pictures" and got enough photos with Rochester 1bbl to get a pretty good idea of how it should be done. You can get an idea of spring size and buy a package in the Dorman HELP! section of the auto parts store.

There is a bracket attached to the front left screw holding the top of the carb together. The spring goes from there to the S shaped lever on the throttle linkage.

The one picture that shows a bracket attached to the front screw on the carb, does not match his linkage. His is all above the manifold. Since his truck is next door I took some pictures.

Phil, Below are a couple pics of a 1965 250 accelerator linkage and return spring posted by our own member Lugnutz on a different site that appears to match your friends truck. Prior to 1963 and in 1967 (I'm pretty sure) the linkage setups were different. The pictures I found of those setups did not match with your friends truck. Hope this may help out! NOTE: 250 and 230 linkage is the same.

Phil, A screen grab of one of your pic with arrows where the spring needs to be.

Thanks Dan, that is exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks Otto for your response!
Anybody know where I might the correct spring? He’s going to the hardware store to attempt to get something close for now.

Phil, In trying to find the spring in GM Partswiki, it seems the correct spring is GM# 3766370 - 6-1/4" free length, 30 coils. Searchs on the web don't show any NOS or reproduction springs that I could find. Further generic searches in various FLAPS keep returning a reference to a Dorman 59207 Spring Assortment (4 different springs) that may contain one that will work. Best of luck to your friend!

My buddy went to the local hardware store and came back with an assortment of springs. One worked perfect. A previous PO put a cotter pin was in place of where the spring should have gone.
He is a happy camper and I thank all that helped me figure out the debacle! A special thanks to Dan who went above and beyond!

Thread has me looking at my 292 setup, which I never was thrilled about. I made things work by pulling straight down on the throttle bell crank at the fire wall with adhoc spring. Maybe this gives me something I can work on to improve. Thanks.

That’s awesome! Hope you can improve your throttle too! It amazes me how a thread can help others too. Thanks Stovebolt!
