I'm wrapping up rebuilding my 235 engine and there's this hole in the front passenger side of the engine in between the fuel pump and the draft tube and I can't figure out what it's for. Doesn't appear to be any threads, just a hole. Any help would be appreciated!
Look a little closer- - - -there's a second hole in the crankcase, below that one, behind the draft tube. The sheet metal baffle plate that keeps the oil from splashing off the crankshaft into the draft tube is missing. The baffle plate is threaded, and there are two "stove bolts" that attach it! Drop the oil pan and scavenge up the right part to install. Jerry

The baffle plate is probably lying on the bottom of the pan. It looks like the stovebolts have backed out, letting it fall into the pan. There was something there when the engine was painted.

In my leftover parts, thought it was off of something else, lots of projects wander through the shop. I had a feeling it was from the engine but I never labeled the container it was in when I tore the engine apart, hate it when that happens. Is it possible to plug the holes and run the engine without it? Because the alternative is a lengthy oil pan removal upside down to put that plate back in which I'd rather not do.
Invest in some oil company stock- - - - -the crankshaft will splash the road draft tube full, and you'll have a big leak from the tube. If it wasn't necessary, would Chevy have gone to the trouble of making it and putting one on several million 216, 235, and 261 engines for over 30 years? Jerry

During John's "wrenchfest" a couple of weeks ago. it took us less than 30 minutes to pull the oil pan off a 1941 216 in order to inspect a loose rod bearing. Back when I was running my own shop, I would probably have fired a flat rate mechanic who couldn't remove and replace a stovebolt oil pan gasket in a bit over an hour. Jerry

No- - - -there's plenty of room to install it by simply dropping the oil pan. Once the pan is off, it's a 10 minute job to install the baffle- - - -and that's if you take a 5 minute coffee break somewhere along the way. Jerry

I was curious, when putting the oil pan back on, do I need to use the four piece cork gaskets or could I just use rtv silicon with no gasket, as I've put an oil pan in before upside down with the four piece gaskets and I don't think it sealed right
Doing things the way the factory chose to on millions of engines over a production run of close to 40 years has always seemed to me to be the right way to go. Every time I've encountered a leaky oil pan after installing it, the reason for the problem happening was looking back at me from the mirror the next morning. Jerry
