I finished installing a 3 speed Browny yesterday in my '48 Chevy 2 Ton. It's an under, direct, overdrive transmission. I took it out for a test drive and it really cruises along pretty nice. I can keep up with the semi trucks now and actually passed one just to see if she could do it. And I just love the way it whines in overdrive.

The install wasn't too bad. Seems like though if you change one thing it leads to changing another. I had to move the hydraulic pump out of the way, run new hydraulic lines, linkage, and so on. But overall things went pretty smooth. And so far I really like the overdrive... I can lope along at 60 pretty easy instead of wound tight at 50 in direct. Plus I'll have underdrive for those really big loads.

I'm envious...beautiful fab work. What are you going to do for a parking brake? Doesn't your brownie have a 'neutral' in it?

Thanks Atomarc. I was lucky in regards to the parking brake. It's the type that has cables running back to the rear axle. Of all the tinkering I had to do on the install, that was the only thing I didn't have to alter. But you're right if it was the type of tranny with the rear mounted brake and the browny was in neutral, not much would keep the the truck from rolling.

Thanks Grigg. The tag said Watson, Brown & Lipp, by Spicer Mfg. I don't know all the history of who made what, but after reading a few of the post here, I was surprised to see all three names on the one tag. Would you happen to know about the time periods of when these were built? I'll try taking a picture of the tag.

I'll have to do some figuring and let you know on the OD ratio.

It's a pretty early one then. I don't know the exact years.


From what I can find Watson and Brown Lipe and Spicer were separate companies.

At some point the 3 merged and eventually only the Spicer name continued. Not sure if Watson and Brown Lipe joined, and the were bought by Spicer, or Spicer bought both one at a time?

It appears as if Spicer did not have their own auxiliary transmissions until they bought Brown Lipe, still not sure when Watson was absorbed.

This is interesting, I'll have to try harder to find facts and dates on these auxiliaries.

WOW!!! Great work I need something like that in both my trucks. Thought that I may had found a 5 SPD. Overdrive to replace my SM420 in one of my trucks, but turned out it wasn't an OD wasn't even the Spicer that I thought it was. Turns out it's an International T-34 made for IH by Fuller. Six bolts mount it to the bell housing and it has a long 1 1/4 10 spine input shaft if some one thinks they can put it to use I can't.

Real nice work.Sorta looks like it belongs there.I have a Watson three range in my '53 6500.Good for low end pulling, but so s l o w .... over the road.

That looks like great work. Any chance you are going to show that truck at Brooks this weekend? I'd like to crawl under it and look for my self.
