While I think it is fun, and appropriate, I have been told the foot starter needs to go. Just after I finished with all the new carpet cutouts!
I would assume that I can locate a key ignition switch that has off/on/start positions. I would rather not drill a hole for a push button.
My question really focuses on the starter itself. What application has a compatible starter? I know I need to confirm for compatible bell housing mounts and pinion teeth.
Anyone been there, done that?
Your guidance is appreciated.
Thanks!

12V foot starter conversion?
Didn't a '57 truck with a 235 come with a stomp starter? Just put one of those in as well as the stomp pedal and linkage.

'Foot starter has to go? Confused. Was it there, but now the hole was filled and foot switch 'has to go'?
You can set up a 3 position key switch to eliminate the stomper.
Was 57 12v? Shoud be easy to wire up with key.
I eliminated my mechanical on the 51, being converting to 12v, but set up a tractor foot switch in place and working on reparing the 2 position factory dash switch.

And 52carl is correct. Mechanical is still just a switch and voltage doesn't matter. Current does, but not voltage...and 6 to 12v to the same engine is close enough.

My guess is that SWMBO said it had to go.

Sorry if my post was confusing. It is a '57. It currently has a foot/stomp starter. It needs to be converted to a key activated starter.
There is a foot pressure activated switch on the starter.
I would 'assume' that I need a solenoid type starter to replace the pressure switch starter.
Am I incorrect in this?
And if indeed I need a solenoid type starter, suggestions as to which vehicle application I can get it from?
Thanks again!
FWIW, this truck is not intended to be an original type restoration. It is intended to be as reliable, safe, and fun as possible for a 67 y.o. truck.

A 57 car with a 235 would have a solenoid type starter. You could replace the ignition switch
with the car type or just add a push button switch.

Your assumption is correct.

Key activated (solenoid) starters were available in '57 six cylinder trucks as an option. My GUESS is that any 12 volt key activated starter from a 235" six cylinder Chevy would do the job. Ignition switches with a "start" position, key cylinders and mounting bezels are available at the "usual suspects". Your already there bypass resistor should be used.

Bill and Fred,
Thanks for the replies.
This makes it almost easy. (I probably jinxed it now!)

Rebuilt starters are readily available
and the wiring is straightforward.

Thanks again!

Another plus of using the V8 ignition switch is faster acceleration wink
