Hello Everyone,

I have a 55 first series, all stock including a 6 volt generator. The generator does not quite align correctly with the fan belt. Its off in that it sits too rearward and also that it seems to be askew a few degrees. The bracket is a very simple U shape. Looking online, this bracket seems to be for a 55 thru 62 engine (presumable a 55 second series). Can someone please show a picture of a 54/55 generator bracket? If I have the right one I suppose I could just wallow out the mounting holes but my hunch is I have the wrong one. Thank you!

Can you show a picture of the current misalignment? You may be able to shim the brackets or maybe you have something backwards?

Joe, A quick look in the 1929-57 Chevy Master Parts book shows at least 3 different U-shaped generator mounts for the 1955 1st Series trucks. There were apparently 3 different generators (30, 45 and 55 amp units) and each used a different bracket.

One bracket listed with an Overall Length of 7-1/8”. Another listed as 8-1/4” Overall Length. A third only listed by “stamped” part number “3703618”.

It’s very possible over the years your bracket may have come from something else, or is mismatched to the generator currently installed. It would help knowing which generator and bracket you have to see if we can help with the alignment issue.

On another possible theory, some brackets can be flipped from end to end so it bolts to the original mounts on the block, but moves the generator out if proper pulley alignment.

Please provide more info and some pictures so we can try and help figure it out. 😉

Sometimes if it is not too far off you can remove the pulley & put the lock washer on the back side of the pulley to space it out a little.

Joe, It looks like someone has already wallered out those mounting holes to try and correct the misalignment, but there isn't enough meat or space left in the bracket to allow for further movement forward. Best guess is your bracket was meant for a different generator than that one. Can you provide the generator numbers off that unit so we can tell which one it is? Perhaps then we can ID the correct bracket to go with it from the previously posted parts book info?

Mendonjo, what part of East Tennessee are you in? There are a couple of junkyards nearby that may have what you need.

The bracket does have a number stamped in the underside 3703618

Per my parts book Group 2.277 that bracket 3703618 was used on 1953-55 COMM (6 volt) with 1100018 Generator (Type 18U, 45 amp, 9.5" O.L.).

Joe, Sounds like the next question is - which generator do you have? If it is other than the 45 amp unit noted by Mike B above, the bracket you have wasn't meant to go along with the generator you have.

Considering my earlier reply info, what is the length of this bracket you do have??? That info should clue us in to which of the other brackets would be correct for the generator you have.

The 54/55 1st gen bracket is same as 216 due to the waterpump/damper position being the same. 55 2nd through 62 had the different lower waterpump and larger damper so they needed a different bracket to line up the generator.

I had to modify my mount to line up my 57-to-54 swap.

Found a pic of my bracket. Had to move it out 1/4" or so. Had to flip it and drill another hole.
