He did not paint it & I don’t think it was boiled out. All I saw was fresh grease on the lifter etc. I have put a couple of hundred miles on it. I just noticed this morning that bluish smoke blows out when I hit the throttle quickly. I drove her 10 minutes after she warmed up good. It still smoked when I returned. I don’t see any drop in oil level lately. Will it do that before the rings seat? 1953 Chevy 153A 3/4-tonWorking on my project since 2015Follow along in my DITY | | | | Joined: Jun 2022 Posts: 530 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2022 Posts: 530 |

That clean oil is difficult to see on the dipstick! 1953 Chevy 153A 3/4-tonWorking on my project since 2015Follow along in my DITY | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 Renaissance Man | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 | Do you know who rebuilt it? Some folks' idea of "rebuild" differs from what is correct. A sloppy cylinder boring/honing job will make it difficult for the rings to seat with the cylinders. If it were mine, I would drive it on a road where you can safely work up to 50 MPH and let off the throttle down to about 40, and keep doing that over and over again. It's hard to tell how long you will need to do this to seat the rings. Too many variables. The reduction of smoke is what you need to look for. I have had two 235s completely rebuilt without cutting any corners and neither of them smoked or consumed oil. I realize that your engine is a 250, but the same principal applies even with a push lawn mower engine.

Kinda hard to get a push lawn mower up to 50 MPH to seat rings.

Dad had bought a new D6 Cat back in '48 that burned oil excessively. The Caterpillar rep came to the field in a business suit and sprinkled Bon Ami into the intake with 2 fingers several times then let the engine run for about 10 minutes. Told Dad to "Shut her down and change the oil." It never burned another quart of oil after that. The Bon Ami scored the cylinder walls just enough for the rings to seat. That D6 was still pushing earth when he sold it in '98. Gotta be Bon Ami, it's a finer grit than Comet or Ajax and only works on new or newly rebuilt engines.
