I have a 1941 chevy pick up, model AK. It has a 1953 235ci engine with which I am using the original 216ci bellhousing and transmission.
My question is? Where can I find rear engine mounts that fit? The mounts that I have been receiving are completely different than the ones I have. The surface that mounts to the crossmember (single hole side) is completely flat, but the ones I need have to have the edge that faces the frame rail partially rolled up to allow for clearance as the crossmember angles up. Using the ones that are flat hold the bellhousing up by about 3/8" to 1/2" off the crossmember. Has anyone had this problem? Am I going to have to re-vulcanize my old ones? Where would I get that done? The one on the left is what I’m looking for.

Have your old one re-vulcanized. They may even have some NORS. Call them.

CuzzFuzz, I did a bit of research in my Chevy Master Parts books and think I may have found an answer to your incorrect rear mount dilemma. My 1929-53 Parts Book lists GM# 3702198 as the correct rear mount for your 1941 AK 1/2 ton. However, my 1929-46 Master Parts Book lists GM# 594741 as the correct rear mount. Below are the 2 different parts books illustrations of the mounts, showing there is a definite design change that is probably the root of your fitment problem with the reproductions as they are designed like the later part numbered item. Also, later Parts Book data shows that GM superseded the earlier # 594741 with # 3702198. That doesn't mean the newer design would have been exact fit, just what GM designated as the correct part from that point forward as they stopped making the # 594741 design.

That being said, there are a number of NOS GM# 594741 mounts being offered on epay which look to be suitable to resolve your fitment problem. Here are a few offers (none are mine) that you may decide to pursue. They have good varying picture views that show the distinct difference with the later style one in Kevinski's reply above and I think those differences will resolve your interference problem.

Pair of # 594741 mounts for a buy it now price

Single # 594741 mount for a buy it now price

Single # 594741 mount offered at auction

Best of luck in resolving your rear mount problem! thumbs_up

CuzzFuzz, I see the pic you added to your original post. 👍

Maybe add a couple more views of those mounts. From the angle you show they kinda look like the ones in Kevinski’s reply, but can’t confirm without seeing them from other angles.

CuzzFuzz, After a bit of sleep to help clear the cobwebs from the gray matter in my head, I realized the problem you reported having with the replacement mounts is they do not have the slope marked in the circle of the original mount in the below snapshot of your original pic. Sorry for the slow up-take on the understanding. dang

I looked through a number of our regular vendors web ads and although they show new mounts with that slope pictured, the reproduction products themselves all seem to be the "flat" ones to the right in that pic.

I think the answer may be, other than sending your originals out for revulcanizing, to see about snagging some of the several NOS/NORS rear mounts currently being offered on ePay. These all have pictured mounts showing the sloped edge you need. Here is a sampling that I found this morning:

A pair of rear mounts

A single NORS rear mount

A single NOS rear mount

Another NORS rear mount with 8 available for purchase

I am sure that there are others, but these looked like the best opportunities to find what you need. Hope this info is helpful. wink

My ‘50 half ton needs new motor mounts. Currently has a 216 but being replaced with a 235. Do the motor mounts fit either motor?

Thanks

The key to that is if you are using your original bell housing with the newer 235? If so, no change in mounts is needed as they connect to the bell housing and not the later engine. wink

Everything that bolts to the rear of that 216 will fit the 235. Be sure to use the 216 flywheel if you are using the 216's starter. It will work well with 6 or 12 volts. The 12v starter needs the 12v flywheel.

You will be faced with the decision of what to do about the waterpump. The preferred method is to get one of Dave68's conversion plates on this site and rebuild your 216 waterpump. The 235 pump is too low to center with the radiator and the fan will hit the radiator. That method is a can of worms to make it work satisfactorily.

CuzzFuzz, I just spoke with Ron and he described your situation exactly as it unfolded for me recently. I bought new motor mounts and I noticed the shape was very different from the ones I have used previously. I figured they were a new style so I put them in. Well, my trans would not sit flat on the cross member. I was fortunate to have a motor/trans combo in my garage that I had removed from a donor vehicle. The mounts were in very good condition. The shape was just like the new ones I had received. The difference was the metal was angled up at the outside edge to accommodate the angle of the cross member. Everything went together smooth. In reading through this thread, I believe Gdads51 is correct in saying you need part# 594741. That is exactly the part I had used on my first two trucks with no problem. 594741 was all that the resto houses sold back when I bought them some years ago. Looking through my catalogs I see The Truck Shop has the correct picture but that was where I ordered and got the version that did not work. Jim Carter catalog has a pic that is not real clear. They specify to check your widths to avoid errors. They list a 2" wide mount, ME218, which may be correct. Chevs of the 40's lists part number 756700 with a picture that appears to be correct. I do not have any on hand that will help you out. If you cant find what you need maybe you can either put on the angle your self or trim back the bottom plate to the point where it will sit flat. There will still be enough metal to keep it all firm and together. Having held the other mounts in my hand I can tell you they don't have nearly as much metal on that bottom edge. Hope that helps a little. Best of luck. Rich

Gdads51 ….. I do plan to use the original 216 bell housing, so it’s good to know I can use 216 motor mounts

Jethro …. I’ll mount the 216 flywheel to the 235 so I can convert to 12 V.
I bought a 1954 235, so the water pump is high in the same position as on a 216. I won’t have to make any water pump adjustments

Forgive if I'm reading that wrong. But if converting to 12 volt starter you need 235 flywheel. Unless you're are going to use 6 volt starter.

You can use a 6v starter with 12v system but if you do, you have to keep the 6v flywheel that goes with it so the teeth and gear angles line up correctly.

At least now I know someone else who’s had this problem. I just found a set of mounts on EBay that look like part #595741. Hope they work!!🤞 Thank you for talking to Ron and leaving me a swift reply.
