39 7M, No need for anyone to PM you to answer the fitment technical question. Those aren't "state secrets" - LOL! Someone will surely be along shortly to help with that answer. If you are looking to locate/purchase rocker arms, post an ad in the Truck Parts Wanted forum. wink

I can only provide the info from the parts book...

Section 0.333

Valve Rocker Arms are the same for all 6-cylinder engines 1950-58.

Valve Rocker Arms are the same for all 6-cylinder engines 1959-62.

Per Section 0.269 the 848 Head was used from 1955-62 which spans both different sets of rocker arms...someone else will need to answer why they used different rockers on the same head.

Due to a change in the oil delivery to the rocker shaft Chevy changed the rocker design. 1950 — 58 rockers had a groove centered in the in the hole for the shaft. On 1959 - 62 rockers the groove was offset ¼ inch to control the flow of oil. For an excellent explanation with pictures visit member Pre-68 Dave’s blog ( Chevy 235 guy). His site has an amazing amount of great information including the item listed as "235 rocker oiling". The information applies to the 261 as well.

The question is, what year is your block?
The rocker arm asm. you need depends on the year of the engine block, not the head.

As No1300 has pointed out, one of our own ‘bolters “Pre ‘68 Dave” is an expert on these Stovebolt engines and has a website that show the differences in the rockers and oil supply thru the years these engines were made.

Here is a link.

The rocker arms and shafts will bolt on and fit properly, clear back to ones used on 216, 235, and 261 engines from the early 1940s, through the early 1960s. Different arrangements will need to be made for proper oiling, depending on the year of manufacture of the engine, and some cylinder heads.
