Or does anyone know which PTO fits this transmission? I have two SM420 tranmissions with PTO's any chance they might fit | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,228 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,228 | PTO's all use the same SAE 6-bolt housing but they have different driven gears, so the SM-420 will bolt onto the NP-540, but the gears won't mesh. You need to find the correct unit for your NP-540. Yes the NP-540 has the PTO provisions on both sides. The drivers side runs off of the reverse idler gear. The passenger side runs off of the second speed counter gear. With that said, I believe the PTO driven gears would be different based on which side you mounted the PTO. PTO's could be bought with the output shaft pointing forward or backwards, gear reduction/high torque, 2-speed, forward and reverse etc. Most older dump hoists and wrecker winches used a single speed (one gear) PTO. I've got a pasture art rig with a 540 direct in it, just waiting for a rig to put it in.

Never found book of PTO combinations. I always mark PTO’s I remove as to where they came from. I have two off 420’s I am saving. Found a PTO idler gear for my ‘54 GMC 630 by just searching on EBay, lucked out.
