I'm buying one of the Chevy's of the 40's newley rebuilt gauge clusters... but I'm buying from an individual 3rd party. New, still in the box. My question is; how can I tell if it's been set up for 12volt or 6volt? Chevy's of the 40's offer them both ways. My truck is running a 12 volt alternator setup. I don't want to burn up the new cluster if it's wired for 6volt. How can I tell??? The seller acquired it with a truck purchase and says he doesn't know.

Can you pull one of the illumination bulbs and check whether it is 6V or 12V?

Otherwise you might have to call them and ask.

If it’s a 12 volt conversion the fuel gauge will need a runtz resistor installed. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will be damaged. It’s possible the rebuilder might have one already installed?

It doesn’t have any bulbs. It’s a brand new unit wrapped up in the box. They don’t come with the bulbs included.

Then what is electrical on it?

Oil -> mechanical
Temp -> mechanical
Speed -> mechanical
Ammeter -> voltage independent
Fuel -> Can be used as-is for a 12V system as long as you don't ever plan to go back to 6V later (Jon G has an extensive writeup on this)

Is there something else you are concerned about? Or does the 46 use different senders?

Edit: Here is one of the places Jon G wrote about his findings. He is generally pretty helpful and would likely offer more info if you reach out to him.
