Just wondering does the tag and inspection exemption still exist for vehicles used by farmers and waterman in virginia? my cousin has been useing his 53 gmc for hauling grain, watermelons etc with just a hand lettered tag saying farmuse. When we had a farmette I tagged my 48 1 ton in maryland farm use but they had pretty strict rules never was questioned in my travels.

I can't answer that one but it is a very good question.

I would just permanently register it , just find and old set of plate's the year of it and take them to the dmv and register them to it , it is then exempt from any further town county city tax's it is exempt from having a inspection sticker , it cost's $11 buck's one time fee and it is registered forever !!

19673ontree: The Virginia law changes on July 1st. You'll have to get a Virginia Inspection yearly and pay $50. It was nice, but those days are soon to be gone. I don't know about farm trucks...

Summary as passed:
License plates for antique motor vehicles and antique trailers; penalties. Provides that applicants for antique license plates show evidence of ownership or regular use of another passenger car or motorcycle. The bill also changes the fee for registration and license plates from $10 to a one-time fee of $50; corrects the dates for issuance of metal tabs; permits use of these plates to carry or transport passengers, personal effects, or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show; and requires that vehicles must meet safety equipment requirements for the model year in which they were manufactured. In addition, the bill (i) provides that DMV shall suspend the registration of vehicles registered with antique plates if the vehicle is not properly equipped or is otherwise unsafe to operate, (ii) establishes a Class 4 misdemeanor for violations of this act, and (iii) requires that DMV revoke and not reinstate the owner's privilege to register the vehicle with antique license plates for a period of five years. Lastly, the bill provides for the cancellation of antique vehicle plates issued prior to July 1, 2007 if, prior to January 1, 2008, registrants do not provide the Department with evidence of owning or having regular use of another passenger car or motorcycle and do not have the required safety certification.

thanks for the replies my cousin just views his old trucks as tools to be used so isn't likely to pursue antique plates. The rule as stated seems to just apply to those wishing antique plates.For my trucks if i get them back on the road i'll just go with historic tags and enjoy them on local jaunts.

I just went on the virginia DMV website and read it all , YOU STILL DON'T HAVE TO HAVE AN INSPECTION STICKER ON VEHICLES PERMANENTLY REGISTERED ! it read's that the vehicle has to be in condition where it would pass inspection , it always did say that ,
in a nutshell all that has changed is they want proof you have another car and it's now $50 buck's , other than that it's the same ,

I live on the TN/VA border and go to the cattle market in VA in my farm trucks and asked the same question at our local VDOT station and was told "as long as the truck is strictly farm use there are no requirements for inspection, insurance or tags other than the truck must be clearly marked for farm use". Farm trucks carry the same restrictions as tractors and must have a reflective triangle mounted in plain view of vechicles behind you.
However, any time you deal with the state or local goverment you will get a different answer to the same question each time you ask.

I hope your right. I've been told by an elected official, I've got to get it inspected every year and have a second car. Who knows... I'm not going to have to wait long as I'll soon be at the DMV trying to use the 1951 plates I'v got for the fire truck.

It was bound to happen. And I bet it happens to us here in Maryland, too. I see too many people abusing the antique plates as just a way to avoid the vehicle inspection.

There is a guy down the road with an early '80's Grenada or something like that -- it's rusty, the paint is nearly off, the windows are cracked and the muffler is hanging by a wire. It smokes a lot, too. But it's okay because he has Historic plates ...

Virginia had the YOM law from the start that read your antique vehicle had to be of condition that would allow it to pass inspection but you did not have to have it inspected AND YOU STILL DON'T !
the change's make it higher $cost and you have to have another vehicle ! that's the change's it DID NOT put inspection sticker's back on the classic's .

The discussion and vote in Richmond earlier this year was all about what John wrote above. Many folks have purchased a junk car and put antique plates on it just to avoid taxes and inspections. The state of Virginia decided to try to deal with that problem. We'll have to see what impact it will have.

I agree with what they did , it burn's me to see a rusted 77 datsun with antique plate's and a load of gravel's in the back !!!!
what they did will fix it
#1 the $50 dollar fee is higher than the $35 for regular
#2 if you don't have another car your registration will be revoked ,
PROBLEM SOLVED !
I use my 67 camaro and 67 C10 for what is intented with the law they are my hobby I drive them when it's nice out and I have gas money !!!!
