Got a quick question, but first the facts: 1953 3100 with original 3 speed transmission and torque tube. I've just reinstalled the transmission in the truck and need to fill it with gear oil. There are discrepancies with the hard copy shop manual and online manual, due in part to different editions. My hardcopy manual states removing a pipe plug to fill the universal joint. The only pipe plug that I can see is forward of the u joint and would fill the main case. There is a hex head bolt/plug by the u joint. Is this the u joint fill location? Also, does the transmission really only take 1.5 pints? I thought you filled until the level was close to the fill plug opening....
The main case fill/check plug is visible at the lower right of your photo. The plug just ahead of the torque tube pivot is for the U joint. That one doesn't need much, just a cup or so. Fill the main case until you can reach through the hole and just barely touch the fluid with a fingertip. Filling the case all the way to the bottom of the plug hole can cause leaks due to heat expansion of the gear lube. The spinning gears splash the lube around inside the case. Jerry
