I am looking into to buying a 1948 Chevy 4400 1-1/2 ton its all in great shape it will run and drive. I would like something smaller as it is bigger than what I need. I would like to put the cab on a newer frame but I don't know of the width between the two. Will this work. Does anyone know the with between the 1-1/2 ton cab from the 1/2 and 3/4 ton cab. Any help would be appreciated.

Cabs are all the same until you get to some good sized GMC trucks, then the cab gets bigger, but you can see the difference in those.

The fenders on 1.5 and 2 ton Chevy and GMC trucks are one size larger than the ones on 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton. The hoods are actually smaller on the big trucks than on the smaller ones. This is because the fenders are taller, so the hood is not as tall. The grills are different too. Even though there are minor differences in the sizes of the bars, parts of the big grills can be used on the smaller trucks.

Yes, I was trying to say only the bars can be used.
Although I have heard that there is actually a difference in the size of the bars, not enough that you would notice, but they are apparently different.
Can anyone else confirm this, or not?

So, if the bars from the pickups can be used on a 4400 or 6400 AD, then I should be able to build a chrome grille for my '47 2ton wrecker. grin

I've measured the bars, from big trucks, & pickups, & I'm coming up with the same measurements. I've probably disassembled 15-20 grilles, in the last 20 years. Only difference is the back bars, & grille frame.

can also use a hood filler strip off small trucks that runs down the center by welding in a steel strip under emblem to make hood filler longer.

I was under the impression that the hood center strip was shorter on the big trucks, as the hoods look like they are not as tall on the big trucks.

I'll be measuring one of each in the morning,

You'll also notice that the 2nd-4th grille bars have notches on the back edge to help you keep them in order.
