Just for cruising, with a 350 motor and with the 700R4's steep 3.06 first gear, you would do fine with a common GM Corporate 8.5" 10-bolt. Anything between a 3.08 and a 3.36 would do well with that transmission. You should be able to pick up a 10-bolt at any salvage yard for a good price, and score a posi while you're at it.
