As part of the 12v conversion I’m doing on my 1955.1 235 engine I’ll be replacing the original generator with a 1-wire alternator. I would prefer to keep and reuse the original mounting bracket that Held the generator in place. Has anyone made slight modifications to the original generator bracket/bolts and if so, what did you specifically do? I’m thinking that a long bolt with various size shims/spacers would probably work but I’m interested to hear if you’ve done something different as part of retaining the original bracket. Thanks in advance.

I used short lengths of black iron pipe with the inside diameter close to the same diameter as the bolt, and some washers to fine tune the alignment.

Thanks. You left the bracket in its original mounting position when adding the pipe and washers?

Take a look at the Alan Grove bracket sets. You can see the alternator is mounted in about the same place as the front of the original generator. Now look at the top brackets for 53-54, and 55-62 and you can get a sense of the arc, or lack of arc, you will need for the top bracket in order to have sufficient movement to adequately adjust the belt.

My 235 came with this engine mount and this alt fit perfect. I used a spacer at the water pump and cut the end off this bracket arm (Spectre Performance 42263 Alternator Bracket Kit) and drilled a new hole. Belt...Gates TruFlex V-Belt 3/8 Inch x 41 Inch - 1410 Alt...ACDelco Silver 334-2110 Alternator. As a gauge the center hole in the ALT is lined with the motor mount bolt.

I took the original bracket off and drilled a new hole in it so it could be flipped end for end. This allowed the alternator to line up correctly with the pump and damper pulleys. I used a spacer like Carl suggested when the alternator was installed.

It looks like your belt Is off alignment a little. You could shim the pulley out somewhat to get it lined up.

I cut up another bracket and welded a piece of it at the right spot on the first one. The alternator fit without shims and the original slots allowed for fore/aft adjustment. In the process of fitting various reman GM alternators over the years, I've discovered that they vary in thickness at the mounting boss by enough to require either washers or the judicious use of a file to make them fit. One time I did get lucky and it was spot on and the same as the one for which I made the bracket.
