For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 95 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2007 Posts: 95 | Getting ready to install in a medium duty (class-7) dump truck. I have never seen one installed. So i am alittle lost. It is divorced / It has mounting ears at rear, the cross member holds these ears and a disk type E-brake. My big question is: What holds up/steadies the front of trans ? A: modify input/output no u joints just straight coupeling and hang it off the rear of main ? B: use a carrier bearing close to input? C: Fab a front cross member and a mount for input flange ? D: It will be fine hanging from to rear only ? E: ??????
Pictures are always very helpfull | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy underdog,I'm afraid the answer is "E", there should be a circular mount for the front of the trans with a two bolt flat flange mount which attaches to a crossmember. Between the two transmissions is a short connecting shaft with two "U" joints in phase, and it is usually collapsable, as much as a shot shaft can be, hope that helps, if you need more info just ask. | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 95 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2007 Posts: 95 | Yes that helps. Where can i find a picture of said item ? The front crossmember goes over or under ? Is there isolation rubber at crossmember ? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy again underdog, both crossmembers are above the trans. there are supposed to be isolation rubbers at all four mounts . I'm not a computer guy, but I'll see if my partner can post what pitiful drawings/pictures I can find | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | | | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 95 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2007 Posts: 95 | Thats a big help. So the front is a support collar. Thank you very much. I have info on ratio"s and such but cannot locate load capacacity. Do you think this box will hold up to 40,000# loads, Motor puts out: 210hp @ 2600rpm, 509ft/lb torque @ 1600rpm, | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | The model 6041 means 600ftlb of torque, and 4 speed, and I think the one means auxiliary transmission.
So a 5831 is 580ftlb and 3 speed, a 7041 is 700ftlb and 4 speed, a 1241 is 1,200ftlb and 4 speed.
What I don't know for sure is if the torque rating is engine torque, or engine torque multiplied by first gear ratio in main transmission. If it were the later I think even a 235 with a 7 to one first gear is to much engine for that transmission, and I know they were put behind larger engines than that. So it sounds likely that the torque rating is for engine torque.
I imagine it will hold up fine in your application if you are careful, but a 7041 is probably better suited to your job. I would install a temp gage and keep an eye on it, you are more likely to kill with high temps while pulling a load than with a sudden catastrophic failure, or if it is catastrophic the high temp will give you a warning.
