Original or no? Seems like the other photos I see are like the Chevy's with round bulbs. Haven't seen one like this on my google rabbit hole adventure yet.

I managed to find this photo from a Russian military museum. I am curious if it is a military only thing.

Yes, that's a military style marker light for blackout conditions. Here's one for sale.

As silly as it sounds to ask, what is a blackout condition?

Update: googled it. That's wild. Also frightening really.

Looks just like the one that came on my M38 Willys Jeep! They didn't reinvent the wheel for every vehicle, they just used what they had.

Are you asking me if my Jeep has blackout taillights? Yes it did, but I swapped them out for Civi lights for better night driving visibility.

The M-151 Jeep I bought surplus when I was on Okinawa had similar lights. They project a dim glow straight ahead and back, just enough to creep along at low speed when unfriendly aircraft are lurking overhead.

Do you still have the Mutt? Uncut ones are quite rare.

Nope- - - - -lost it in a really nasty divorce out in California- - - -along with the 47 Mercury convertible I bought back in high school! A jury of hotrodders would have probably acquitted me of the revenge I plotted, but never quite got around to doing over that situation!

They would turn off all the lights so aircraft had a hard time finding them to blow them up during war before GPS. The blue dot lenses supposedly also made them harder to see.

Jerry,
The ones you linked for the jeeps, are those exact repops? Just curious because of the slightly different designs between yours and mine.

I've never seen one of the repops up close. My Jeep had a single "blackout" headlight in addition to the conventional ones. It was mounted on the right front fender, and cast a dim glow toward the shoulder of the road so the driver could avoid going into the ditch. It was about twice the size of the ones we're discussing here.
