I was looking at the serial # on my 1949 3 window 3100 and could not find a Build plant # 7 . Is there a reason for this ? Thanks for any input.

That is strange. According to the GM Vehicle Info Kits, thru the AD years, 47-55.1 the only plants assembling trucks were:
1. - Flint, MI
2. - Tarrytown, NY
3. - St. Louis, MO
5. - Kansas City, MO
6. - Oakland, CA
8. - Atlanta, GA
9. - Norwood, OH
14. - Baltimore, MD
20. - Los Angeles, CA
21. - Janesville, WI

I even looked at 46 and 41 and still no plant Number 7. ohwell
GP is definitely the model code for a 1949 3100. I assume you're talking about the serial number plate on the door pillar. Is it possible it could be a partially stamped 9?
Do you know where the truck came from? Since you're in Maryland, it would make sense for it to be a Baltimore truck, unless it came from another part of the country.

Maybe someone else can shed some light on this mystery.

If you're smart enough to take it apart, you darn well better be smart enough to put it back together.

Post a picture of your serial number plate so we can see the "7"...

Is it a "2" that looks like a 7?

It’s on the title. I think it is a misprint. I have had this happen before on a title with the year printed as 55 when previous title was 54. MVA in Md changed it for me with pictures I had of old title. Truck was from MO so it should have been a 3 or 5 . Who knows. Serial plate was missing. Both bill of sale and title say 7 . I think miss hit 8. Thanks for all the info.

I wonder how far they would ship a new truck in the '40's and '50's. When I was living in Denver in 1975-1976 I ordered a new K20, it was built in Flint, I think it was only 6 weeks from order date to when I picked it up at the dealer. I owned and drove it for 18 1/2 years.

GM probably had particular destination limits for each regional plant. The plants are more centralized now, and stuff gets shipped all over from the one or two assembly plants, depending on model.
My '51 was built in Oakland, the closest plant to Alaska, and has stayed here for it's entire life. On the other hand, in the Lower 48, there's no telling how far a truck would be from it's home plant over 70 or so years of ownership. For instance, in 1939 my Mom's family moved from Nebraska to California with an old truck and a Model A Sedan. I'm sure that Model A stayed in California.
