This may not be the right place to post this question but since it pertains to this area, I figured it was. If it is wrong place, please move it to where ever you see fit.

Have decided to use the engine in my 55.1 3100 for daily driver. I need to get the crankshaft machined. There was one place in Waldorf (I think) that wanted $350 for the job because of 4 different size journals. And he wouldn't source bearings. So here is my question; Does anyone know of a good machine shop that has done a good job for them but for less $ than this guy in Waldorf, MD. Considering the weight of crankshaft, I would rather drop it off instead of shipping. So I'm looking for a good and honest machinist fairly close (2-2.5 hr. drive) from me in Callaway, MD. D.C. area would also be alright but anything north or west of that will be extremely difficult.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Stewart ... I *highly* recommend Mattingly's here in Compton -- 2 minutes by boat, 15 minutes by bike from HQ. They did the crankshaft for the 261 I'm running in the Stovebolt Flagship, the '49 1-Ton.

They build race engines so they will grind the journals to race specs ... which is why I run 15w-40 in my engine ... wink

I'll see if I can dig up their phone number.

2nd choice would be Stauffer's in Mechanicsville.

Thank you, John! Is that Mattingly Precision on Joe Hazel Rd.? If it is, that will work out PERFECTO!!!!!! May I ask about what they charged you? And their turn-around?

Thank you, Phillip, for your encouragement. I'm definitely going to need it.

BTW, IF this works out, I'll have a free, completely dismantled engine that will need to go to a GOOD HOME!!!!!!!!!

That spare engine would probably feel right at home in the boondocks of Middle Tennessee, surrounded by a dozen or so of its siblings!

Stewart ... I'll have to dig through the files to see if I can find that invoice.... Golly, it was about 6 years ago that we did that so the price has probably gone up. As I recall, the turn around was fairly quick.

And yes, the Joe Hazel Road Mattingly's. If Jerry remembers well enough, he might be able to tell you if he thought they did a good job or not. He can tell you more about the grind and why I run 15W-40 in the engine rather than 30 or 40 weight.

Jerry -- Between two engines and my 171 project ... sounds like you have a good reason to roadtrip up here. smile

Jerry, like I said, IF it all works out, the engine is yours. Just to warn you though, you may have to resurface the lifters or get new ones. They got out of order before I got them numbered. You may have to pick it up, also.

AND I'll have a white painted front bumper(1947(?)-1955.1) and grill (1954-1955.1) free for pickup in the near future.

John, thank you! Don't bother going through your files; if you're like me, the engine would be back together again before it was found. (But then again, being a retired gyrene officer, you probably keep really good files.) (BTW, just kidding). I'll call them this week.

Stewart ... Peggy keeps the files around here. In my line of work in the Corps, it was best *not* to keep files... wink

Stewart,

I got the file for John to look thru (under supervision, of course). Most of the receipts I know (Jim Carter, Rock Auto, NAPA, Guy Bros, etc.) but a few have cryptic writings on them so we'll need John to decipher so you get the info you need.

The file is on his *in* box. grin
