I did some trading last year for a '66 Int. COE, single axle, 24k GVW, auto, 348 v8 gas, and 4X4! I need to turn one of my big bolts into an all-terrain, short wheelbase work horse. The rated HP of 186 may be useful over my 108 HP 302's.

The old GMC motors are not cheap to work on, but I'd be surprised if parts for the old International are any more available. Didn't International stop making light trucks in the 70's? The joke was they got them perfect and didn't need to make any more.
All I know about those motors is that a friend tried to put one in an old Scout and could not make it fit.
The last job I had before I left Idaho for good was driving a tandem axle binder that had an International 394 with a 5 and 4. That was 25 years ago and I don't recall much about that truck or its motor any more.
In those years there was a jeep pickup running around with a Pontiac 347 under the hood and Internal 1-ton four-wheel-drive.
At the time I owned a '51 GMC that was sitting on military ambulance type running gear with 5-hole budd wheels. That truck made it to Portland with all my stuff loaded in the bed.
I'm not much help am I...

Most used a 2 barrel carb and sucked gas big time. The V8's were used in many 1/2 ton and up trucks and travelalls even some later Scouts. I have a 72' Binder out back with the complete running gear(ran when I parked it, LOL), 348 3 spd w/granny. I used it as a wrecker for years till I broke the frame, it would pull a house down but wouldn't pass a gas station. There are still companies making parts for the engines but their not cheap. Good luck.

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | We have a 305 in a Scout II, a 345 was the larger option, and a 392? would fit if you wanted to install it. The 304 is a great engine, more than enough in such a light "truck", and like a typical scout it gets lighter by the day.
If your engine runs good and has low miles I would re-gasket it to a point, and run it. If it needs major engine work or a rebuild I would look for something cheaper to work on. Although if you want a good engine and don't mind paying for it, by all means rebuild the one you have, it will last a lifetime with good care.
A friend of ours ran a drilling business (soil exploration) and swore by International gas engines. He had one in every truck and piece of equipment he owned, even if he had to install it himself. They are long lasting engines compared to ford or Chevy engines, I have heard something about the different material they used for the blocks....

I think this would allow me to use the diffs and and case installed in one of my big bolts. I can then stick with one of my 302's and keep them all the same. Now what to do with an 348 and tranny? Sorry OldSub, the more I have learned about these 302's, more I don't think I want to part with them. I have three now and I have spotted two more I'll add to my lineup.

I'm not surprised. They are great motors and if you can handle something just a little out of the ordinary, making it just a bit more expensive to work on, they are great!
I'd keep them too!
