Looking at the Service Manual, it says to use lard as a lubricant for installation.
Any ideas what property of lard makes it appropriate for this? It's only needed to prevent galling of the OD of the bushing as it's pressed into the spindle. Just like Brylcreem- - - -"A little dab'll do ya!"
Back in the dark ages, we used lard in the deep fryers at my grandparents' restaurant- - - -it gave the French fries a lot better flavor than vegetable oil!

When the drilling job starts to smell like frying bacon, the pressure on the drill press quill feed is just about right.
