Anyone know of an aftermarket tank that will fit where the original one is for subject truck

Doesn’t need much capacity

Not wanting to spend the $600 for a new one

Having trouble getting fine rust out of OEM tank

Thanks

Have you thought about cleaning and sealing your tank with a product from Eastwood or Bill Hirsch?

Jack, I can tell you that the sloshing compounds available today for cleaning and sealing a fuel tank actually work. I did that with my '56 Cadillac 20 years ago and it hasn't leaked, flaked, peeled off, or anything. New tanks weren't available then and mine didn't have holes in it so I figured what the heck? Look into it.

I don't remember what product I used - it was probably Eastwood's. All I remember is the final coating was blue. No rust or leaks 20 years later.

The local radiator repair shop here will boil out your gas tank, too and seal it.. Maybe you could have yours cleaned up and repaired by a radiator shop or just boiled out. The you could apply the sealing compound yourself.

This and along with cutting small square holes in top for hand cleaning(sludge removal).
Weld back closed. I use POR 15 3 x so far. No problems. One was 27 years ago.
Still going.

Jack,

Is this gas tank needed for the 1939 GMC "Tow Truck" you posted pictures of in the "Electrical Bay" forum Jack Ryan's 1939 GMC Tow Truck???

Helps to provide as much detail (adding the truck Model info would help) in your post so folks can better try and answer your question.

As noted in fellow Bolter's replies above, cleaning/sealing your tank is probably the best/least expensive choice as finding a reasonably priced tank that will fit in the original spot without having to make a bunch of modifications may be difficult.

How do I find out?

Prime path is saving the old tank

I’ll research the products mentioned

Back to you soon

Many thanks

Jack,

Take a picture of the truck data plate and post it here. According to this GMC site page for serial number plate locations, you will find the data plate "Located under hood on R.H. side under cowl."

Many folks will chime in to help figure out what it is if you can provide that. thumbs_up

Jack,

Take a peek at this Truck Model Identification page.

The AC 102 is listed as a 1939 Model 100 (conventional 1/2 ton), but with a wheelbase of 123-3/4".

Check your actual measurements to be sure. wink
