My brother has a 1950 3100 he's trying to restore by himself but is running into issues getting it ready for primer. He is hand sanding the entire truck but it has several coats of paint. And can't seem to get it smooth. Any help or leads will be appreciated. Thanks

A DA power sander is fast, but won't always get it smooth, and it may be necessary to remove all the old paint and start from scratch. A DA sander with coarse enough disks WILL remove the old paint, which may be the best approach. The multiple layers of paint probably have different hardness and the transition between layers may always show up, although priming and block sanding will eventually cover those up. Once it has primer on it, a long block for hand sanding is the way to go.

Soda blast or sand blast are quickest but chemical does a good job but slower. Each has good vs less than good aspects. Paint now is much better than it used to be but prep is very important to make it really holdup. Good luck... | | | | Joined: May 2015 Posts: 9,830 Housekeeping (Moderator) Making a Stovebolt Bed & Paint and Body Shop Forums | Housekeeping (Moderator) Making a Stovebolt Bed & Paint and Body Shop Forums Joined: May 2015 Posts: 9,830 | X2 to what vettecrazy said. I had most of my truck blasted. And it was just a couple coats of old paint. My main reason was to get rid of the rust though.
