Sometime tomorrow, the 51 GMC big bolt I bought a while back will arrive at my little chunk of paradise on a dead end road in Lincoln County Tennessee. I had hoped to make the trip to Guntersville Alabama to get it, but life got in the way in the form of family medical issues. It will arrive on the back of a tow truck- - - -running backwards to avoid doing any rear axle or transmission damage. It's entirely possible that it will be further away from home than it's been in the past 70-something years, as it was supposedly bought for use on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, and has stayed in north central Alabama for all the time since then. Does 12 feet qualify as a "long bed"?

I'm thinking about tricking it out with Patriot Guard Rider gear and flag poles, to participate in PGR veterans' funeral escorts, without doing any permanent modifications to alter its "antique vehicle" status.

Looks good from here, congrats! I think 12 feet will get you in the "long bed" group. My '57 is a 15 foot grain box on 163 in. wheelbase.

I'm tinkering with the idea of a beavertail bed extension of two feet, with slide-out car hauler ramps and a PTO driven winch at the front of the bed. A 3 speed medium duty Brownie is also in the works- - - -one I've had on hand for several years, looking for the right application.

I had seen this Truck listed for sale on the "BOLT back in early June. At that time I was actually in Ft. Payne with my wife on our anniversary, I really considered going to look at it. My wife just said "WELL???". I held out and Jerry snatched it up. As things go it worked out as VEW listed "Thor " for sale the next month. thumbs_up

Slight delay- - - -the tow truck driver assigned to transport the truck to me attempted to double the price for the tow when he showed up to do the hookup. The owner of the company is going to honor his original estimate early next week. When I ran a towing and recovery service a few years ago, any driver who attempted a stunt like that would be unemployed- - - -immediately! Kudos to the boss who chose to man up and make things right, even if there will be a few days' delay!

That would make a sweet car hauler running a PTO winch and everything

I'm going to do a cosmetic cleanup, leaving the original military stencils intact and doing some running gear upgrades that won't detract from the "original" patina. I'll also trick it out with bed sideboards with Patriot Guard Riders' decals and flagpole holders, to participate in veterans' funeral escorts, etc. One fellow PGR member in Nashville has a mid-1960's fire truck set up that way. I talked to a local sawmill owner yesterday about custom cutting some oak planks to rehab the bed wood from a big tree that was uprooted by a windstorm on a friend's property recently. The tree is about 3 feet in diameter at the stump end.

I hope to make it to a Homecoming event in it before too long. Gotta keep the big bolt guys represented! There's a 61 American LaFrance pumper out in the pasture with a 401 V6 in it that might get into the project lineup, eventually. I've got a big rig Brownie slated to replace the driveshaft-mounted fire pump on that one. The fire bed is pretty much trashed, so it's going to get fitted with a "Fontaine No Slack" 5th. wheel and a goose neck ball- - - -should be able to tow anything I choose to hook up to!
