The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Speedometer not working

I've got a new speedo gauge and new speedo cable.. Didn't work when I did my test drives around the block.. Now that I have the transmission out I hooked up the trans side in my drill and ran it up and the speedometer didn't register anything..

Am I missing something here.. I've got the transmission on the floor cleaning it up so I can pull the speedometer cable out and hook it to the trans side to see if its turning but that still won't matter if the gauge isn't registering..

Any ideas would be helpfull.

I would start by pulling the gauges out and making sure the speedo cable is properly affixed to the back of them.

If so, unhook that and make sure the top end of the speedo cable turns when you turn the bottom end.

Someone correct me or confirm.
I remember when I tested my speedometer and cable I had to spin the drill in Reverse?? Then the speedometer worked.
Am I remembering right?
When I first hooked it up and ran the drill in Forward nothing moved.

Bingo. Works fine in reverse. So that means it’s on the transmission side.
What do I do to check further knowing it’s not working. Can you get parts for?

So cable to speedometer works fine?
Is the insert on transmission side worn out (rounded)?
Otherwise I'm not sure on the tranny side. You might have to replace the gear insert.
Hopefully other's will chime in.

I got the speedometer fitting off and put it through the washer.

First thing is that it is all metal. They made things to last back then.

Second thing I noticed was it had a tooth missing. Wonder where that went.

Does it come apart somehow so the gear can be replaced or do I need to find a new one.

I can't help you on that one. Experts will have to Chime in on the spedo-gear

I had to make a wedgie out of a piece of flat toothpick and shoulder it along side the square cable piece. I've also wrapped the square cable piece with a very little bit of aluminum foil.

If that side has a tooth missing, I would be looking at the mating gear in the trans pretty closely. There is a decent chance it is also damaged and both sides need replacing.
