We have broken two windshields already and had 3 professionals trying to install the windshield. None of them could do the job or wanted to come back. They have suggested the weather is too cold at times and to wait until it is hotter. That just seems to waste time! On the internet I read/saw someone suggesting not use the soap and rope method but to cut the gasket and glue the window in. Has anyone heard about this method and can tell me what to do?
I took the window out before I started the restore so it did not get damaged. What a mistake that was! I just have the windshield and some touch ups and the truck should be on the road. If I do not get it done in the next little while, I think I will just sell it. I am 75 and getting to the point that it is more fun to drive the trucks than to work on them!

I am in the same boat had the cab painted and need to put front and rear glass back in. the cold is not a problem down here. Was going to go the professional installer route my self. May I ask what cracked /broke the first one? The gasket in the old cab was cut. Havent got out the new gasket to lookat it. may be a good idea. Good luck and post if it goes in ok.
My wife and I was trying to put the rubber on the old windshield, and it broke. I then hired 3 glass installers. The first 2 tried for 2 - 3 hours and then said they could not do it. The third guy tried and then said the opening was a problem and for me to fix it. I then modified the opening, and he came back and tried to install. It was nearly all in and then he broke it. He told me to get a new glass, so I have. He has had some health problems and cannot finish the job. This banging the glass, just does not sit well with me.
I also have this to do on my 59. I have the rubber on. If its 1 piece, it has to stretch over the windshield. I can see it breaking if not careful and lucky. I am ready to go. I watched this video a few times.
It does not look hard, but by yourself. IDK about that. After a month and a half waiting for an appointment with a glass guy from the dealership , he never showed up the day of install. I`ll try it myself ,but was gonna wait till the driving season was up cause I know once I jump off I have to do it right.

Getting the rubber around it if everything is warm and you are careful seem to be OK as we did that 4 out of 5 times. It is the pulling the rope out and hitting the glass with the hand that seems to be the problem. If it does not go in easy and you hit it too hard with the flat of your hand, it cracks and it is time to purchase a new windshield. The glass people say if it breaks, sorry, will come back after you purchase a new one.
I have done it twice, once with the original windshield and again after a collision with a rock thrown up by a speeding truck on a gravel road. I did not break a windshield either time but it went in a little easier with the original windshield than the repro. Three people are recommended to install, two on the outside and one in the inside pulling the cord. It is important to check the fit before attempting to install. These links have a pretty good description of the procedure for checking the fit to the opening and for the install: Installing your windshield - part 1 and Installing your windshield - part 2 I made little wood spacers to nest the windshield into the opening to check the fit before install. If you are not using the stainless reveal molding it will also go together easier, just one less thing to be concerned about. I used Filling Station rubber the first time and Steele the second time.
