Does anyone know the correct color to paint a 235 engine? I would like to touch mine up in my 46-2 ton. The engine shows a lot of traces of green, but most I see are painted red or blue, also any one make repro decals for the valve covers? Thanks for any info.

Look in a HEMMINGS motor news, there was a vendor that sold the engine enamels, he also listed the correct color for years and models of engines.

Is it a 1946 235?

If so, a valve cover decal will be hard to find, I think.

If not a 1946, what year 235 color do you want?

No matter what year 235 you have/want, you will find that both vendors and people on this site have strongly held opinions/disagreements on original engine colors.

It is a 1946-235 engine. Most everything,seems to have a green color to it. My Dad bought the truck new,so I know it wasn't a rebuilt engine. Most I have seen posted are blue or chevy type orange {red}. Kind of got me confused. I can faintly see the decal on the valve cover"Loadmaster" High torque engine" maybe I should just try to hand letter it myself?

When I pick up the '35 Fire Engin, she had another motor. Some are saying it was a early 235. I am going to hang a '58 235 in the old piece of fire apparatus and I think it would be cool to fly the colors of '35. Do you know what the color was in those days?

Can you post a photo of the "Loadmaster High Torque Engine" emblem? You will most likely have to do this by hand

The 1946 Chevy engine color is not red or orange. See below about my opinions (guesses) on the blue color.

That engine pain colors article from Pickup \'n Panels in Print says Blue Gray. This is the color that a lot of people and vendors disagree about. I have seen a light-blue gray color and a dark-blue gray color (it is not the Blue Flame Blue color). Good luck figuring this one out.

I am going to paint mine and I think that Jim Carters Light Gray engine paint for that year is the way I going. I have seen trucks of that year with this color engine. Where is Castelton? I live in western NY in Gasport next to the erie barge canal.

The correct color for the 1935/36 engine is a dark Gray that some say has a hint of blue while others see a hint of green. This color was used from 1929 thur 1953. The Filling Station carries the correct color. I have NOS 1936/36 parts that match what the FS sells.

Bill Hirsch Light Gray is wrong, and they know it, but continue to sell it as correct. The problem is he's been selling it for so long the average guy thinks it's right. I was a victom of his trap back in the 70's, but now know better.

Not trying to stir things up, just giving you the information I believe to be right after 32 years of research on 1935 Master cars.

Jim Carter's gray is correct for 54 and later. Mike B's suggestion sounds good. Make sure you get the dark grey and not the 51-62 blue.

Castleton-on-Hudson is about 7 miles south of Albany, on the east side of the river.

After poking around a little today,back in the dark corner of the shop,[where the 46 sits until warm weather] seems the engine color was a darkish gray.[guess I need to get my glasses adjusted] Tim, I will take a photo after I repaint the valve cover and re-letter it,and post it. Thanks for all the input from every one

Hey Mike B Let's see them NOS gray parts that would be neat.

I am under the understanding that at least all pre-war trucks had gray for the engine color. Parts of mine are blue (done by the previous owner many ages ago). I know this is wrong.

Of course the rest of my engine is simply oil colored. :rolleyes:

I have a 54 6400 with the 261 engine. The color from the factory was green. Jim Carter lists a medium green, with a part number PT1441 forthe 1954 -63 261 engines. Jim carter also list an olive green color, part number PT117 for the 39-48 engines.

Robert Hensel\'s 1996 article on Chevrolet engine colors shows that in some years the 261 engine might have been yellow (this is the same information at the link given by red58, above). I have seen a yellow 261 Jobmaster engine in a tow truck and the owner (Bob Adler, an expert) thought the yellow color might have been original.

My 1960 261 engine had remnants of the green color that is very close to paint that Jim Carter sells for all 261s.

JC's olive-green PT117 is listed for 39-48 GMC engines.
