I purchased a new master cylinder from Jim Carter parts for my 1953 6400 2 ton truck. The original master cylinder I removed had a double flare 1/4' fitting in the end cap that was part of the large nut end cap of the MC. This was not a a fitting added to the large nut cap but rather part of the cap. The new one I received from Jim Carter is the correct MC but has a deep 5/16" threaded end with a flare similiar to a pipe thread, put it was not a pipe thread. Before I sent this back I tried to find a 5/16 to 1/4 adapter at several local auto parts stores. None to be found. I called Jim Carter's and from what I was told, Jim Carter looked up the MC for my truck & confirmed it was correct. I did not speak directly to Mr. Carter, I am not sure the girl who I spoke with relayed the info correctly. However she was told that I could send it back if I wanted to or I could swap the end caps if they would swap. I decided to swap end caps. Currently they appear the same except the thread size & flare for the hydraulic line. I have not swapped them yet due to having to sandblast the old one & paint it. It's now drying. I felt that if I sent it back and had them send me a new one I would be in the same situation, or did the new MC get the wrong cap installed at the manufacturer. I am pretty sure this MC gets used of more equipment than the 1953 Chevy trucks.

Sorry to make a long story out of this. Has anyone else had this issue with the hyd line size being different when purchasing a new MC. If so what was your solution?

I realize if we are doing these restorations on these old trucks we need to be resourceful. However I don't expect to pay good money for a part that is supposed to fit my truck & have to modify it to able to install it. Am I missing something here? Nothing against Jim Carter's I am thankful there is a company out there that handles parts for these old trucks & I will continue to use them for my parts.

If you're interested in solving the problem instead of complaining about the parts supplier, contact me by PM. There is a quick, easy fix for it. I can either make the necessary modifications to the end cap on your new part, or tell you how to do it.

Sorry Jerry I was not complaining about the parts supplier, more so curious if the manufacturer inadvertently installed the wrong end cap. Which unless brought to thier attention, the supplier may never know. Also others may or may not have the same issue if they buy a new MC from any parts supplier. I was only making a statement. If you read my post to the end you would see I am happy with the parts supplier & was only stating my experience. I appreciate your offer but I already fixed the issue by installing my old end cap on the MC.

I just bought a 51 GMC 3 ton that needs a master cylinder. If there's a possibility your old one might be compatible to that application I have the machining facilities and experience to put a stainless steel sleeve into it. Maybe we could do a little trading by PM?

I have my old master cylinder from my 1952 6400 with Huck brakes if that does anyone any good.

I'll need to do a little checking to see if the GMC master cylinder bore and stroke matches up to anything Chevy used. I haven't had a chance to inspect the truck I bought "sight unseen" except for some pictures yet, but I'm pretty sure there should be a Hydrovac somewhere in the mix, and the PO says it definitely will need a new or rebuilt MC and some other brake work.

Jerry if the 53 Chevy 6400 2 ton MC is the same and you need a decent rebuildable core let me know. Just know I did exchange the end cap from my new one to my old one. I'm not sure how bad the bore is, it may just need cleaned up & honed. This MC is singe chamber with 1.25 bore.
