I have a 1953 GMC with a 235 ci engine. Any idea of what type of rear main seal it has? It was rebuilt about 10-12 years ago.

What year is your 235 engine?

Then it most probably will have the rope type seal. The neoprene seal was developed in 55 but as I recall 1956 was the first year where the slot was machined to the right dimensions for it.

Correct. 56 pass car was first year for neoprene and the rear main cap was machined specifically for that seal, whereas the earlier motors had less precise, deeper, cavities for the rope seal.

1955 was a change over year.
Early engines used shims on the mains and the deeper seal groove, and later in the year engines did not use shims and had the shallower seal groove as mentioned.
