Looks like my pinion seal is leaking gear oil in the 55 Grumman, 3/4 ton FF
I search unsuccessfully about replacement procedures but no luck.
I’m guessing I would need to pull pinion, right?
Thanks

You need to disconnect the drive shaft & pull the yoke. Then remove the 5 bolts & remove the flange. The seal can be removed & replaced from the back side of the flange.
Post a photo of that truck. I used to work on stepvans for years. Most werer Grummans.

Thanks George. Here’s a pic of Doughboy (it was a Taystee bread truck in Baltimore before retirement) and the leaky seal.
I see what you’re telling me and it doesn’t look like I’ll need any special tools or go through any set up procedures to replace the seal, right?
Is there a gasket on the flange I need to replace?

Victor , You'll need a 1/2 air impact and a 1 5/8 socket. I had to turn down the OD of the socket to 2.140" for a length of .750 (3/4 ) for clearance to remove the nut. I used a large pipe wrench over the flange to keep the yoke from turning.

Cool truck. Those aluminum bodies last forever.
It looks to me like the seal is not leaking. It looks like it is leaking between the yoke & the shaft. You might try taking the
pinion nut & washer off, clean it with some brake clean & put some RTV sealer under the washer & tighten the nut down real tight. There is no crush sleeve in that rear end.
If you do have to remove the flange there is a gasket behind it. They are never reusable. If you can't find one a thick bead of RTV will work.

Thanks for the diagram Dusty. Very helpful.
I’m trying to get some needed servicing done on doughboy before the ODSS gathering at the end of September.

I’ll try the sealer, George, and see if it works. It’s not under pressure so maybe I can make it work. If it doesn’t, I should still have some time.

Thanks guys and much appreciated.
Victor
