It’s been a while since I last posted. I decided that since I (the one who’s been posting the community stuff) have moved away from my cousin (the one who owns the truck) it was time to finally post the full story about the GMC CE5500 AKA “Project Bruno”. So, it all started when my cousin and I were searching on Craigslist as a joke for a small truck, I found a listing for A “GMC Dump truck” that was way cheaper than a dump truck should be in our opinion. We went out to view the truck and got to see it turn on and even the dump bed go up and down, it really was a great deal overall and we couldn’t pass it up. The truck had a story behind it and all we were really told was that the truck was all original and that the seller was the brother of the owner who wanted the truck gone due to bad memories. When we got the truck back home, we looked at the breaks since the seller was getting rid of it due to not being able to get the breaks working. We had to flush the brake system to get some old rust out of the lines and readjust the drum breaks but then we had them “working” but really stiff. We also went around working on other things, like tracing wires, fixing lights, painting the truck, cleaning the interior. Lots of cosmetic and even needed stuff. The high-beam switch was able to stick so we had to clean it out, and we had to replace the headlight switch due to it being very old. As we worked on the truck it got the nickname “Bruno” because we had gone to watch a Disney movie before we even bought the truck and just like the character “Bruno”, this GMC was a truck that seemingly no one talked about. It took me several days to get even the tiniest bit of information on this truck, which is when my account here was made with me asking questions here and there just to find out more about the truck. We had lots of theories about the truck, some that made sense, others that were far-fetched, but it was all in good fun since we couldn’t find anything ourselves. Eventually, I found a manual for the truck that I bought and we got to learn a lot more about the truck, from how the brake booster works (part manual part broken YT video) to how many variants of the truck were made. Soon after I had left due to life reasons, my cousin was able to get the brake booster tracked down to one company that still worked on them, but they were out of cores. Luckily the core my cousin had they said they could repair, and soon after all of that he was able to get the brake booster back and can even drive the truck safely now! It went to a car show just recently. Overall I’d say its been a fun journey with you all! One final mystery about this truck though, we just recently found out that the engine was painted…. it's not actually blue (which would mean replacement engine) but under the blue paint is orange paint. IDK if this is just a primer or if this is the OG owner's doing, all I can say is that the truck runs and according to my cousin, quite fun to drive.
As a final note, I wanted to thank everyone who answered questions, the mods who helped keep posts safe (like the RH 5 rim discussion, I had no idea how dangerous they were until that post was locked), and everyone who joined these posts, There probably won't be an update from me for a long while since I'm busy with a lot of other things, but I wish everyone the best of days and I will be stalking the forms to watch other big bolts come back to life.
