I had my sm420 transmission brake band relined. The lining is too thick measuring 1/4 inch. What thickness lining should it have?
So I can send it back and tell the reliner. Thanks, Jim

How tight is it...1/4" sounds about right...did you give the brake shop the drum diameter? Maybe they pulled the band to small/tight when the set the lining???

What year and size truck are you working on?

Did you band get bonded or riveted?

Post a picture or two...

That sounds like it may be a little thick but I haven't worked on one in many years. There are a lot of adjustments on those things. Have you backed out the adjustments?

When I install it on the fixed end and around the drum it won’t turn
I haven’t even started to tighten up the adjustment side. I was told it was a trans out of a 1958 3/4 or 1 ton I’m replacing my 3 speed and installing Napco running gear from 55 gmc into my 57 3600 I’m reading that dodge used similar setup and the lining is 5/32

If your installing a divorced transfer case you don't want the parking brake on the transmission...it the transfer case gets bumped into neutral the truck will roll away. NAPCO transfer case has the band brake on the rear output shaft to prevent this issue or they used the rear wheel service brakes as the parking brake.

Hi Mike I have a timken t-32 transfer case 55 and earlier had this two stick version the chassis I took it out of had no provisions for emergency brakes on the rear end and it looks like the e cables in my truck interfere with the t-case so talking to a guy that had a 55 Napco he said his e brake was transmission mounted that’s why I am headed this way appreciate your input I am looking for pictures of t-case linkage I have the two sticks but don’t know how they mount I think there is a cross brace rod from frame rail to frame rail and these levers attach to it jim

You may need to search the rock crawler vendors to see if they have something that will work on your T-32...

Just as a heads up, my 58 one ton NAPCO came with parking brake on the service brakes. Because of the lift, I had in-line tube match the longer one using my ends. I know where this truck has been it’s whole life, so I know it wasn’t altered. So you could always go that way.
