Hi guys, new to the forum. I know this topic has been discussed in detail years ago but since then available kits are hard to find if even available. I have a 2nd series 1955 Chevy 3100, 235 engine with a Muncie 3 speed column shifter. To make a long story short, I’m putting a 1940 Ford Big Boy body on the Chevy chassis. Lots of modifications as you might guess. I need to change the column shift to a floor shifter. The Mr Gasket 7667a kit probably would have worked but I can’t find one. Any suggestions for an alternative? Thanks

Thanks for the info. I’m leaning towards a new part as opposed to something I may have to repair. I have enough other modifications to deal with such as frame shortening, steering and body work. Am I allowed to provide my email address in these posts in order to bypass the 4 post rule for PM?

Please correct me if I’m wrong… in looking at the products on eBay, all appear to be kind of partial parts (need repair) type items. They all seem to be missing a few critical pieces and none of them include the support brackets that attach the actual shifter to the side and top of the tranny.

Hopefully this qualifies as my 4th post so that I can PM you. Whew

I agree, Peggy- - - -do you suppose that Chevy frame might die of embarrassment, being a trans-gender vehicle?

Thanks Peggy. I got a good deal on the Chevy chassis and as well as the Ford body. Plus I happen to like the body lines and swooping fenders on the Ford pickup

The fact you are working on a Chevy chassis is great. The fact you are working on a Ford is not Forum correct. Questions concerning the Ford part can be discussed in the Greasy Spoon Forum.

Posting your contact information on the open forum will get you a lot of internet misery.

Martin, he figured out the PM system, and I found him a "pre-owned" shifter on Ebay that's a bolt-on with no modifications. He bought it already. The really good thing is, it's a Hurst dual pattern, not a "Mr. Gasket"- - - -that's a complicated way to spell "junk"!

Sounds like Jerry got you hooked up and then some. He's a good guy. Glad you all got a chance to connect, even via a phone con. He'd show up to help if he could. Actually, I think he said that!!

I get why some of you are caught up in wether or not I should be using a Ford forum as opposed to this one. But, I’m focusing on the Chevy truck chassis and drive components right now, so forget that I’m placing a Ford truck body on it. It sounds weird but, in California, since the chassis has a chassis number and the Ford body is pre WWII without a VIN#, it will be registered as a 1955 Chevy truck.

Jerry, I read your email about using a Crosby clamp to make shift lever tabs. I like the idea but trying to figure out what type of metal the clamp needs to be made of for welding the 1/4” plate to it. I only have a mig welder and if you saw my welding abilities you would never talk to me again. Thank god for grinders.

Actually, the shift lever could be made without welding- - - -put a 90 degree bend in the flat bar and drill it for the two legs of the Crosby clamp. Then just bolt the clamp to the side cover shafts and sandwich the shift lever between the nuts and the clamp saddle.

The “prototype” I made will work with a few adjustments. I didn’t take into account that the notch in the shift rod was clocked at 2 o’clock. Otherwise it bolted up nice and tight. All I have to do is grind the weld off the Crosby clamp and rotate the plate steel to 12 o’clock and reweld

"I love it when a plan comes together!" Use a 3-cornered file to put a few notches in the Crosby clamp to engage the splines in the shift shaft, or you might encounter some slippage on an "energetic" shift! The Hurst shifter also has stop bolts that can be adjusted to prevent over-torquing the shift shafts, so don't forget to adjust them when the installation is complete.

I have 2-3 shifters and some linkage , a mount bracket and the shifters work fine. they have been put away properly. let me know if interested
