Current carb is a Rochester Quadjet. Pretty well gummed-up. Motor has only been run about 600 miles last 12 years. Everything has been re-done up to carb. Don't know if I should just re-build this one or go for a new carb. Any suggestions as to what would work best with a 283 w/power glide.

I would rebuild Q-jet they are a good carb if set up right and there would be no linkage mods if you stick with the Q-jet.Just my 02 cents worth Goodluck Biddaboy

I second the rebuild motion, I love quadrajets. They are not that hard to rebuild. Get Doug Roe's book on Rochester Carburators. It covers the QJet in great detail.

Biggest problem with the Q is the soft metal body. Shaft holes usually need rebushed to stop leaks when rebuilt. Easy way to fix it is to got to a 600 cfm Holley or Eldelbrock. Cost is in the $200-250 range for a factory rebuild.

Edelbrock is making a new q-jet, which looks like a good one, but it ain't cheap. eek

If you 're going to stray from GM, I'd suggest a Carter AFB...Holleys like to leak and eat power valves....

Wouldn't go too big either, if this is going on a 283...500-600 CFM max....unless you're building a 6,000 rpm track-monster.
