All,
Decided to have carb rebuilt on my 49 3600 (216) with Carter W-1 – any rebuilders you can recommend ?

The Carburetor Shop, (Jon H) a member of this forum, sells the most accurate kits for your carburetor. I rebuilt my Carter YF with a core and kit from Jon. It's been working flawlessly for the last couple of years. I don't think he rebuilds them any more but I might be wrong.

I have had many carbs over the past 20 + years rebuilt by Daytona Parts Co. They've done an excellent job on all carbs. Ask for Tim Hewitt.

The first thing to do is to determine what carburetor is on your 1949.

It came with a Carter type W-1 identification tag number 684s.

This link will help you to determine what you have: Carter W-1 identification

IF you have the 684s, then you have another question to answer. Is this going to be numbers-matching for show or a driver.

If numbers-matching, check your wallet before sending out the carburetor, and then "bite the bullet" as it is said; cost will be about the same as restoring a Corvette dual (2 4-barrel) set-up. The reason is that many parts, including the accelerator pump, in the 684s are simply unique, and literally must be fabricated by hand.

If a driver, consideration for a replacement Carter YF is a least something to think about. A new old stock YF or a fully reconditioned YF is going to be significantly less than having the 684s rebuilt.

Another consideration might be for a 1948 carburetor, the Carter type W-1 574s. You will lose the "faster idle" when pulling the choke, nothing else.

I highly recommend the Carter YF. My truck runs great with it, always starts with no fuss. Over 4000 miles on the carb, so far.

Ii was told the 49 carb was a 1 year only. Found one at hershey car show for 20 dollars. Needed rebuilt so I took it to a fellow at the same show. He took it with him and rebuilt it and sent it back to me. I haven't put it on truck yet as truck is running good right now. But the rebuilt ones looks really good. It was I think around 160 for the rebuild. The fellow is from NY.

Thanks all, you have given me a few things to think about – it is a 684s, at least has that tag on it, have not considered the YF, will have to roll this around and make a decision. Didn’t realize rebuild of 684s would be so $$$. Thanks Jon for your knowledge and familiarity with the W-1.
