I found a 292 that has a spun bearing for the cam. My question is can it be rebuilt? What should I look for? Try to turn the motor. I was told it was not broken in correctly. The motor is still together. Should I take the chance? They are asking $800.00. What would be a fair price?

$800 for a non running engine is steep.

You don't know what's wrong with it and you don't even know if it can be rebuilt because you haven't ascertained the facts on what all damage there is. You can't take the seller's word about anything.

I'd say $100 or so for a possible "rebuildable core" because it's basically a boat anchor right now.

A running 292 at half that price is probably paying too much.

I don't think I've ever seen a spun cam bearing. Repairing that, if it's actually the case, would be extremely expensive. Even a spun main bearing would make me think twice about accepting the engine as a gift, let alone paying anything for it, or even traveling very far to pick it up.
