Can anyone verify if all 1941 thru 1946 Chevrolet trucks used the same bell housing, for 3speed and 4speed transmissions? Does anyone know the model number for these bell housings?

I’m trying to swap from a 4spd to a 3spd and just want to make sure I have all the correct parts.

I’ve researched and found bell housing #838533 AND 839257. Does anyone know which one is correct AND if they are the same for 3spd or 4spd?

Thanks for your help

According to the GM Parts Wiki - Group 0.638 , Housing Clutch & Flywheel , 1938-1947 Comm/Util , Cast 839257 , P/N 3847361 is the correct housing .

Cast 838533 is P/N 601735 and is shown as being for a 1937 Comm/Util

There is no distinction bewtween 3 speed or 4 speed.

Hope this info helps.

Just to add to this post for anyone searching this topic in the future, I found this link with bell housing casting numbers by year and application.

My 46 has the original bellhousing , first came the stock 4 speed trans and later the 3 speed. As of now has a T-5 trans courtesy of a custom adaptor between the bell and the new trans. All worked well.

Be aware that the master cylinder mount bracket is different on the 3 and the 4 speeds. Obviously, so is the floor board.
