I'm going to need to replace my ring and pinion and as most know the options are limited..
I've got a 4 speed tranny and was wondering what is a good gear ratio so it can cruise fairly well..

Looking at a 3.55:1 and a 3.90:1

what are pros and cons or options.

Thanks for any help to this backyard mechanic

Its going to be hard to find a 3:90:1. I was lucky to find a NOS 3:90:1 on eBay, I need that particular ring and pinion because the truck is 4 wheel drive and it needed to match the front differential.

Your stock ratio is 3.90:1 (but your R&P look bad). In order to use a 3.55:1 gear set, you'll need a differential case from a 47-53 1/2 ton truck. The optional 3.55:1 gearset won't fit on your differential case.

Thanks for the info. I’ll see if I can find a 3:90

Ps: found a used good condition 3:90 on eBay and ordered it. Said it came out of a 54 3100 and had been stored for about 30 years. Fingers crossed.

The wonders of modern technology. You located the part almost instantly and will have it in a week or less. How did anybody restore antique cars before the internet?

You'd have been reading Hemmings for maybe months, calling everybody in local and national Chevy clubs, writing letters and posting want ads, and traveling around the country to swap meets. Maybe you'd get the part you needed in 6 months or so.
