I changed my oil and, as always, used 6 quarts; 5 for the crankcase and 1 for the bypass filter. After driving it the dipstick showed that I was a quart over. The bypass filter is wet but there is very little oil in the canister. What gives and what do you guys recommend? Thanks

Fill the canister with a quart of oil after you change the element. Put the rest of the oil in the crankcase.

Seems to me that the overfilled crankcase should have filled the filter while it was running. I would disconnect the supply line at the engine and see if it is plugged. Also check the hoses.

How do you have your filter piped? It should be set up so that it stays full, with the return line connected at center bottom (there's a standpipe inside with a hole near the top for the oil to drain through.) Mine has a drain tapping on it, and if you used that, it wouldn't stay full.

The supplied drawing above shows the pressure line going into the top of the filter can and the drain line coming out the bottom. Seems to me like the filter can would drain down when the engine wasn't running. That's how it works on my GMC, but it isn't a Chevy.

That tapping in the bottom center goes into a standpipe that runs up the inside of the canister. There's a hole near the top of that standpipe for the oil to exit from the canister, which doesn't allow the oil inside to drop below the hole location.

Kevin's explanation is correct. If you were to remove the top cover the oil in the cannister would be up to the level of the hole in the side of the standpipe. If you have very little oil in your cannister I would suspect a restriction / stoppage in the feed line as Phil has suggested.
What oil pressure do you have when the engine is running?

Thanks for all the responses. That diagram is helpful & it seems certain that I have a blockage in the supply line. That's where I'll start.
