Been looking through posts and could not find a straight answer .Can a 49 tube axle with huck brakes be switched to bending brakes by swapping the backing plates from a newer tube axle by grinding the rivets and using bolts to hold the backing plates on .My truck is a 54 and in need of som rear gears and I found this older tube to use and don’t want to mess with taking the gears apart.

You should be able to just pull the axles on both truck and the replacement rear end, and then just swap the differential housing/torque tube in. Some new gaskets and you're good to go. No need to mess with brakes.
Swapping the differential/torque tube isn't all that hard and there's no need to mess with gear pattern setup or anything else. I would say that it's easier than swapping brakes over, as you'd have to pull axles to do that anyway.

If you're smart enough to take it apart, you darn well better be smart enough to put it back together.

So pull the axles. Unbolt the opposite side of the diff cover and it will pull out complete .Sounds good I will try it with the old one first to see if it comes out .Thanks Kevin ,Kevin
