After much reading and diagnosis it appears I am in need of a new generator. Currently, I believe the original Delco is on the 52 half ton. Would like to keep it but believe either field poles or armature is bad. I replaced brushes and polarized but no charge. Will not motor and engine dies when a battery lead is disconnected. So, any thoughts on which or where to buy a new one?
Find a local Starter/Alternator Shop and have yours tested and rebuilt if needed. These shops are still out there.

My generator was rebuilt by a guy over in Conyers. He did my Cadillac, too. You can probably send it via UPS or FedEx.
You've probably already checked, but make sure the problem isn't your voltage regulator instead of the generator.

Couple hundred miles to Atlanta. Generator only produces about 1 volt. Good info for repair shop, if I can't find locally then will call them. I want to keep the Delco. Thanks.
Put a jumper wire from the field term. to ground. Then start it up. If it charges then the problem is probably in the regulator or wiring. Don't run it very long or fast this way.

Tks. I performed that before and after replacing the brushes with no postive results. Going to check regulator before removing generator again today for disassembly and further cleaning and inspection. Note-when backing out of garage I heard a metallic like vibration, while trying to locate noticed no charge. Suddenly, vibration stopped and then charging. Next day, same thing but softer vibrations but stopped with no charge, then when got to 35mph charge went to full for a couple seconds then to slight discharge which is where it is currently.
So does that mean you've discovered your voltage regulator is the culprit?
If so, that's good.
A new, USA made 6 volt, neg ground regulator is made by Regitar.
Part # 231-12020
The only difference from the original is that the cover is different from the original so you can't put the old one on the new regulator. It's the same cover used on the 12volt regulators.
Take the cover off yours and see if there is corrosion that you might be able to clean up and get it working.

Regulator plus some. Replaced Delco several years ago with a BWD brand. Further checks revealed questionable regulator. Cleaned up contacts on old Delco and installed it. It is quite jumpy so will replace it soon. Additionally, replaced the generaror ground terminal connector with too small opening and failed to seat firmly on stud. Oh Well, generator now cleaned with new brushes. Thanks for all help and forcing further testing. GREAT SITE!
Good job. I'm glad you don't have to buy a new genny or spend a couple C-notes shipping yours off to be rebuilt.
Out of curiosity, is the BWD regulator mechanical or electronic? Does it say where it's made?

Not as good as portrayed, shortly after installation it started acting up. Removing the cover revealed the cutout contacts was greatly out of alignment. Was able to mate them up and worked ok.
