I am going to change the oil in my rear differential. I am not sure if I can come up with a replacement gasket. If not, what gasket in a tube do you guys use. Will just the gasket silicone stuff in a tube work by itself as a gasket. The common Permatex brand comes in the blue and black. Which would be best for the differential cover.

I figure if Permatex Grey or Black works on intake manifolds, it's probably fine for a rear diff.

I suppose you could just suck out the old oil like the quicky oil change places do....

I have used permatex black for decades without any issues. It is harder to clean off than a gasket the next time you open it, but it also doesn't leak after a year or two.

I was considering sucking out the old oil but I guess this would be a good opportunity to get the sludge out and inspect the gears. I also hope to never have to do it again. I don't think I will be around when it is due for a change in 50 years.

It only takes a few minutes to whittle out a rear cover gasket, using a file folder, scissors, and an X-acto knife or box cutter. Brush on a coat of Permatex Super 300 for sealer. I used to use sharpened .38 Special cartridge cases to cut out bolt holes, but now I've got a gasket punch set.

Permatex "green" is for gear oil, but as others have said grey or black will work also
