John,

Just a note that I will move/have moved this conversation to the Engine Shop as the on-topic place for further conversation as it is directly "Engine" related.

Others will pile on here with helpful info shortly.

Over 20 years I've used Fram, Hastings, Wix, and NOS AC and Purolator filters in my Cadillac. They all work the same and the car doesn't know the difference. Currently the AD truck has a Made in USA Luber Finer filter installed.

Get whatever Rock Auto has on clearance.

John,

Just a suggestion, but before going too much farther you should read through this detailed oil filter identification tech tip and figure out just which filter unit you have on your '61.

Scroll down to the section covering '60-'63 engines and there is a picture and other details to help identify just which filter unit you have.

Once you do, there are some original GM part numbers noted for the correct filter cartridge you need. Those numbers, plugged in to a basic web search, can provide a list of various brand filters numbers to help you buy the right one.

One note of caution, even though a brand/manufacturer number may show as a good cross-reference to the original number, always check the dimensions on the replacement as some are in fact correct while others have been found to not actually fit.

Let us know how your search turns out or if more info is needed.

My local Oriellys got me a Wix oil filter for my 62 C10 in just a few hours.

Ive been kinda surprised that alot of local places have or can get parts for my 62 👍

Depending on your filter housing, the Wix 51001 or Napa 1001 are possibilities.
They show listed for a 1962 235 anyway.

Be careful with the Wix 51001. Of the last 4 I've bought 2 had slightly undersize gaskets in the box. Here are details of my 2016 conversation with Wix about this problem.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I changed the oil in my 228 this morning. As usual, I put in a new Wix 51001 filter element. This filter comes with two different sized gaskets, with the smaller fitting the lid on my filter can.

The problem is that neither of the gaskets that came with today's filter is the right size. The nearest one's OD (4.19") is smaller than the OD of the can (4.32"). So the gasket doesn't reach all the way to the outer edge of the can. The gasket from the last oil change measures 4.38" OD.

The ID of the gasket is 3.53" while the ID of the can is about 4.15". Plenty of coverage, but the smaller size causes the gasket to not lay flat because of the "crown" of the inside of the lip is intruding into the gasket's ID. The ID of the last gasket is about a 1/16" larger, fitting over the crown.

I sent a message to Wix and will let the forum know what I hear from them.

Thank you Bill for your email to WIX Filters.

The gasket dimensions that we currently have
for the 51001 filter are for GMC trucks from 1955 and up. Generally anything below 1955 was an aftermarket add-on which would explain why
there are gasket dimension differences.

There are 2 gaskets that are packed with the filter. The part numbers are 15018 & 15002

(see part # info at the bottom of this post - Bill)

Thank you for your interest in WIX Filters.

Thank you for the quick response.

I don't think that you understand the problem. I believe that your specifications are correct, but that the actual gasket supplied in my filter was incorrect.

According to your specs, your catalog number 15002 would fit my filter just fine. Problem is neither of the two gaskets supplied in the box matched the size of a 15002. The nearest of the two gaskets supplied had an OD that was 0.23" smaller and an ID that was 0.157" smaller than 15002.

The larger gasket included with the filter I bought was very close to the specs of your 15018, which does not fit my filter canister.

I picked up another 51001 filter today after receiving your e-mail and measured the gaskets included. The larger gasket matched up with your 15018 specs and the smaller gasket is within .01" of the 15002 specs, so this may have been a one time problem. If so, I'm OK with it as it stands.

By the way, the oil filter was an extra-cost option on my '52 GMC, not an aftermarket part. I'm pretty sure it is the exact same part as used on 55 through 59 GMC six cylinder engines in small trucks.

bartamos I agree with you "any one will do" for this kind of system though better names will cost more. I've mostly used Fram and AC, 55 shaker just said wix is hard to beat, well it will cost more for that name. I don't fight sludge so I haven't even thought of my filter in months.
